KS5 Chemistry

Sixth Form (KS5) Chemistry

Examination Board: OCR

At Audenshaw School Sixth Form, A Level Chemistry remains one of the most popular choices for Sixth Form students. It is a facilitating A Level and is compulsory for some highly-respected undergraduate courses, for example, medicine and dentistry but also desirable for many other Science-related courses.

The aims of the OCR Chemistry specification are to encourage candidates to develop their interest in, and enthusiasm for Chemistry. This includes developing an interest in further study and careers in Chemistry. They will have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of how Chemistry works and how different areas relate to each other. The course takes a flexible approach where the specification is divided into topics, each covering different key concepts of Chemistry. Teaching of practical skills is integrated with the theoretical topics and they’re assessed both through written papers and, for A Level only, the Practical Endorsement.

The course includes the key concepts that students require for the study of this key Science. It provides students with the knowledge and understanding of atomic structure, organic Chemistry and the chemical ideas that underpin the study of quantitative Chemistry.

Content is split into six teaching modules:

Module 1 - Development of practical skills in Chemistry
Module 2 - Foundations in Chemistry
Module 3 - Periodic table and energy
Module 4 - Core organic Chemistry

Module 5 - Physical Chemistry and transition elements
Module 6 - Organic Chemistry and analysis

The A Level course is studied over two years. All the assessment for the full A Level course will take place at the end of the two year course. This will be done through three written examinations and a ‘non-exam’ assessment of students’ practical skills.
