Triple Science

Studying the separate sciences means students will cover more content than GCSE Combined Sciences and the triple science route will provide greater preparation for AS and A-level, without overlapping content.

The new subject content for the separate sciences – GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics – is similar to previous content with the A* to G grades being replaced by 9 to 1 for Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

At the end of year 11 the triple science students will sit two papers for each science: each paper will assess knowledge and understanding from different topics.. The duration of both papers is 1 hour 45 minutes.

The questions on each paper will use clear and simpler language, to assess students only on their scientific ability and their understanding of required practical’s. The questions will be a mixture of multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open response.


Paper 1 Cell biology; Organisation; Infection and response and Bioenergetics.

Paper 2 Homeostasis and response; Inheritance


Paper 1 Atomic structure and the periodic table; Bonding, structure, and the properties of matter; Quantitative chemistry; Chemical changes; and Energy changes.

Paper 2 The rate and extent of chemical change; Organic chemistry; Chemical analysis, Chemistry of the atmosphere and Using resources.


Paper 1: Energy; Electricity; Particle model of matter; and Atomic structure.

Paper 2: Forces; Waves; and Magnetism and electromagnetism

Key Stage 4 - How parents/carers can support their child

There are a number of ways that you can support your child though their GCSE Science course, including:

- Encouraging them to use BBC Bitesize and GCSEPod for regular revision of topics.  Your child should be revising thoroughly for every end of topic test and final exam.

- Purchasing a revision guide – we recommend the CGP series of books as they cover all of the necessary content in a student friendly way.

- Check that they are completing all homework on time and check their exercise book on a regular basis; have they completed homework?  Have they completed all of their corrections?  Are they receiving praise for excellent work? 

- Contact the Science teacher if there is anything you are concerned about, or require further guidance.
