Every year the Royal Society of Chemistry organise a series of Christmas lectures aimed at young people. The lectures, designed to engage and enthuse students, were themed around communication this year and were televised by the BBC. A group of year 9 boys were involved in an activity based on these lectures run by the 'I'm a Scientist' organisation. The boys watched extracts from the lectures before learning about advances in communication technology and debating the ethics of devices that listen to you. The boys were then able to take part in a private 30 minute live web chat with a group of experts in various fields of communication, including a Primatologist, a Psychologist and a Software Developer. The boys asked an enormous amount of questions from 'will we ever communicate with aliens?' to 'what is the strangest noise a monkey has ever made?' which the scientists did their best to answer. The next 'I'm a scientist' activity, which we hope to participate in, runs in March to coincide with national science week.
